Computer Tricks
So the last few days I have been dealing with Microsoft Small Business Server 2008 and Windows Vista. I’m happy to say I’m back to working order… but I just found a really usefull link I wanted to share with all of those Windows Vista Users. If you follow these directions you will gain about 3GB of harddrive space.
For users who have Vista with SP2, the “compcln.exe” is found in the System32 folder can help you to greatly reduce the size of your WinSxS folder (running this tool will make it impossible to remove updates and service packs, so make sure you are happy with your updates or you will be reinstalling Windows). To use the file do the following:
1. Open My Computer
2. Double click C:\ (or the drive letter Windows is installed on)
3. Double click the Windows folder
4. Double Click the System32 folder

The old saying goes, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Nowhere does that apply more than in architecture. The façade of a building has an opportunity to really stand out, to stop people in their tracks and invite them in. One way to create this visual interest is to highlight the architecture with interesting and innovative lighting.
There are many innovations in lighting today that can help to create unbelievable media facades. Color changing LEDs can create beautiful light installations and can range from just basic color displays to high resolution images. These can be set to change for holidays and events and can even be used to display advertisements. One example of this is the Goodman Theater in Chicago, Illinois. The south façade of the building is covered in color changing LEDs, making it a well known Chicago landmark. Because these displays use LED technology, they can provide amazing, colorful light while using very little energy. LED technology is not without its drawbacks. LEDs do not respond well to high heat environments. This does not mean that they can’t be used in hot weather climates, however, they must be controlled when in direct sunlight.
Another great option is using pixel panels to create high resolution images. These pixel panels also use LED technology but in a different way as each LED is individually programmable to create a type of television screen with moving images. The challenge with creating visual media facades is that you have to cover the windows with the light fixtures. One way to solve this challenge is to embed the lights within the mullions of the windows or to ensure that there are spaces between the lights so that the people inside the building have access to natural light while ensuring that the exterior façade is a showstopper.
Work with your IALD Lighting designer who has experience with these systems on you next media façade…
